These music theory lessons are arranged in logical order from top to bottom. If you are just starting out, I recommend that you begin with the top lesson and proceed in an orderly fashion down the page. If you already have some of the basics learned, feel free to browse the menu for specific topics of interest. Throughout the following pages, I have attempted to place links to previous lessons wherever instruction contained within that previous lesson is essential to understanding the current lesson.

KNOW YOUR NOTES - Yeah I know. It's a pain in the butt, but you can't call yourself a musician unless you know the notes up and down the fingerboard.
THE MAJOR SCALE - The mother of all music theory. If you want to learn theory, you gotta know the major scale.
NEW!! THE CIRCLE OF 5THS - The tool you need for understanding keys and key signatures.
INTERVALS - The internal structure of music. It all comes down to intervals.
TRIADS - The foundation of harmony. Here you will learn the fundamentals of chord construction and the difference between major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
TRIAD INVERSIONS - Mapping out the fingerboard. Here you will learn to see major, minor, augmented and diminished chords in all possible positions.
CHORD SCALE - Harmonizing the major scale with triads. This is where all those cool chord progressions come from.
RELATIVE MAJOR/MINOR - Understanding the "dual personality" of key signatures.
PENTATONIC SCALES - The starting point for playing great solos. These scales are used by every guitarist who ever spanked the plank.
7TH CHORDS - Stepping beyond the basics. These chords are the bread and butter of blues and jazz.
MODES - The lead guitar player's secret weapon. Everybody talks about modes, but few understand what they are or how to use them.
FINGERBOARD ORGANIZATION - Organizing the fretboard based on triads, 7th chords, pentatonic scales and modes.
MELODIC PATTERNS - Scale sequences for developing melodic freedom. These exercises will help you to take command of the fingerboard.
